Hexachlorocyclopendadiene (HEX) is a reactive intermediate used in the preparation of pesticides used in the agricultural industry.

Hexachlorocyclopentadiene also is used to manufacture flame retardant for use in the wire and cable industry.

Hexachlorocyclopentadiene also is used by Velsicol in the preparation of chlorendic anhydride, which is used as a reactive intermediate in the manufacture of flame retardant, unsaturated polyesters.
